I should have started with saying that I play on PS5, not PC and they are used frequently on console. Shocked? We all know and love? When was the last time you saw anyone using them? Enter two real-life dalmatians (I think their names are Pongo and Perdita), who rush before us into their spotted mansion, where they apparently reside with a slew of unrelated children and a mad woman who is not unlike "The Magic School Bus"' Mrs. Clearly, this is going to be an all-live-action production. The program begins with a boy on a bike and "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" sung by a woman who sounds nothing at all like James Baskett. I'd entertain complaints about the pointlessness of stringing together song scenes with subtitles when the same effect can be achieved with the whole movie on DVD these days, but surely that more traditional method is preferable to the silly rigmarole that is offered here. Pongo and Perdita came much later in the series' life, though, and other than on-screen lyrics, it bears no commonalities with its earlier and superior predecessors. That's the general concept of a sing along program. When the Sing Along Songs line launched, it used select musical scenes from Disney's most famous films and superimposed animated lyrics atop them. It's even more surprising that with a label like that, not one of the songs actually comes from either the original animated film or its live action equivalent, outside of a brief cameo by the fictitious commercial jingle "Kanine Krunchies."

Once you have one string in tune, you can then tune the rest of the guitar string notes by playing a fretted note on a lower string and then tuning your open string to that note. Adjust your note to match the reference pitch. This involves listening to the reference pitch, playing the same note on the guitar and comparing the pitches. This is a little more difficult as you have to tune one of your strings to the reference pitch “by ear”. You can also tune using a reference pitch from another instrument like a piano or another guitar that you know is in tune. As you adjust the pitch of the strings the display on your device tells you when you are in tune. These apps use the built in microphone in your device to hear the pitch of the strings, making this an easy way to tune your guitar. Many musicians may find themselves in need of tuning their guitar without a tuner on the fly or if they’re traveling.įortunately, there are hundreds of tuner apps available for mobile devices, and many are even free. If you’re wondering how to tune a guitar without a tuner, you’re not alone. You can also use a reference note (from another instrument, pitch pipe or tuning fork) to tune one of your strings and then tune “by ear”. How to tune your guitarĮlectronic tuners have made tuning guitar notes quick and easy. If you are playing a chord and it doesn’t sound quite right even when you know you are playing the correct notes, your guitar has gone out of tune. As you are playing, it is a good idea to check your guitar tuning often. Guitars also go out tune from playing, especially if you are bending strings or playing for extended periods of time. You can’t expect your guitar to stay in tune between practice sessions. You should tune your guitar every time you play it. Tightening the strings makes the pitch go up loosening the strings makes the pitch go down. Turning the pegs changes the pitch of the strings up or down. Guitar tuning is controlled by the tuning pegs on the headstock of the guitar. Basics of guitar tuningįirst, let’s start with some of the basic parts of how to tune a guitar. Ruth downie author11/24/2023 A wise course, especially if you planned to travel, might be to find someone reliable and ask for a “theriac” to take every day – a general antidote against everything. That’s just as well, because otherwise he might be prescribing jellyfish as a cure for gout, plastering on ground-up earthworms to mend severed tendons, and recommending the ash of burned seahorses (mixed with pitch or lard) as a hair-restorer.Īnyone could call themselves a doctor in the second century, so if you needed medical help it was definitely a case of ‘buyer beware’. Luckily there’s plenty of evidence that the doctors of the classical world were a quarrelsome bunch, so Ruso doesn’t have to follow all the advice he’s given. But what if a patient arrived with toothache, and he consulted one of the respected textbooks of his day? He might prescribe the sting of a stingray-because according to Dioscorides, “it shatters the tooth and ejects it.” Which would be very authentic, but I suspect anyone reading the story would spend the next few chapters fingering their jaw, and long after closing the book they’d remember it as “that one with the thing about teeth.” He could offer a form of cataract surgery, and some of the surgical techniques he would know were still being used in the field hospitals of the First World War. There are plenty of useful things he could do: setting broken bones, stitching up wounds and putting dislocated joints back where they ought to be. The challenge was to find the balance between making Ruso an authentic doctor of his time, and making him sound dangerously insane. It turned out that there was no shortage of medical textbooks from the ancient world. It’s probably just as well, because if I’d had the sense to run away I’d never have discovered the fantastic world that Ruso and Tilla live in. There were lots of things I didn’t know back then. If someone had told me I was going to end up writing a whole series about them, I’d never have dared to make him a medic. The Roman soldier and the British girl were only ever supposed to fill three chapters for a ‘start a novel’ competition. Guest Post: Bizarre things from research……. With Ruso’s reputation under threat, he and Tilla must protect their small family from Doctor Kleitos’ debt collectors and find allies in their new home while they track down the vanished doctor and find out the truth about the heiress’ dead father – Ruso’s patient – and the unfortunate man in the barrel. Ruso thinks that he has been offered a reputable medical practice only to find that his predecessor, Doctor Kleitos, has fled, leaving a dead man in a barrel on the doorstep and the warning “be careful who you trust.” Distracted by the body and his efforts to help a friend win the hand of a rich young heiress, Ruso makes a grave mistake, causing him to question both his competence and his integrity. There are also far too many doctors – some skilled – but others positively dangerous. Ruso and Tilla’s excitement at arriving in Rome with their new baby daughter is soon dulled by their discovery that the grand facades of polished marble mask an underworld of corrupt landlords and vermin-infested tenements. Gimp logo ico11/24/2023 For purposes of a storage device itself (a hard drive, a USB flash drive, etc.) you need two things: an information file, called "autorun.inf", that defines which specific image file to use as a device's custom icon and of course an appropriate image file for that purpose. Now, I do not know and will not pretend to know the precise histories for Windows' and the various Linux desktop environments' use of icons and the means to edit or otherwise customize them, but what I can say is that largely they work the same. Suffice it to say that the processes for using custom icons in Classic Mac OS / Mac OS X / macOS, and icons for Linux and Windows, are mutually exclusive and have to be done separately. Because this tutorial does not concern Apple's processes, I am not going to include how-to instructions relative to them. their desktop environment) and so adding a custom icon could now be accomplished by copy-n-pasting (and desk accessories transitioned into becoming actual independent, mini-programs instead of embedded resource micro-programs). However, starting with System 7 and moving forward into Systems 8 and 9, Apple gradually pushed some of this functionality into the Finder (i.e. Its user interface roughly resembles old-school file managers, as well as many FTP programs. Users wanting to add or remove fonts or desk accessories from their operating system, up through Mac OS 6.x, would use a specialized resource editing program called Font/DA Mover. One of the most widely-used programs for doing this last-mile work was ResEdit. This had the advantage of guaranteeing their program's user interface always had access to that font, and no additional action needed to be taken by the end user. As another example, some programs required specific fonts, and so a font would be created or otherwise acquired by the author, and using the same process just described, would embed the font in their program. For example, one might have made a program with sounds for user interface elements, or sounds for a game. Once a sound was created and saved, that file would be opened using a special utility called a resource editor, the sound component copied, and then pasted inside of the program one was making which needed that sound. Two classic examples of this are fonts and sounds, but this broadly applies to a wide variety of resource types. The Macintosh platform has traditionally used the method of embedding resources within a file (or a program) as a way of containing them. Even though this tutorial is about creating icon files for Linux and Windows, I want to start with some brief comments about Classic Mac OS, Mac OS X, and macOS, mostly to explain what the difference is. While I would recommend you read through it, if you are an experienced user of technology, you can skip to section 2 to dig into the process.Įver since the beginning of graphical user interfaces, there has been a need for icons, and in turn there's been a need for a data format as well as a mechanism to associate the image with the object to be represented.
